A microgrid control lab opened at the University of Central Florida on Tuesday, the product of a partnership between Florida Power & Light and GE Digital to simulate a modern grid control room and accelerate research.
The microgrid will be powered by the existing 1.4 MW solar array which doubles as a parking canopy and incorporates a 3 MW battery system.
Together, the 500-acre sites will have the capacity -- 150 megawatts -- to generate enough energy to power 30,000 homes.
The plant will have 409 MW/900 MWh of capacity, enough to power 329,000 homes for more than two hours.
Utility-led expansions, competitive prices, and favorable state policies are developing Florida into the Southeast's leader for solar capacity, according to a new report by S&P.
